A Day in the Life of Geeky Sex Toys Founder & Dildo Engineer

Geeky Sex Toys was founded by a Brisbane based couple in 2016. Emma is a self-confessed geek and her love of all things nerdy led to a range of sex toys inspired by Pokemon Go, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Dr Who and more …. Basically their business model uses pop culture to reimagine sex toys in a fun way to remove some of the stigma associated with adult toys and be a leader in a niche market for naughty nerds. Now we’re partial to a bit of Wham Bam Boing in the bedroom but having some superhero powers is definitely a bonus so we asked Emma to tell us a little more about Geeky Sex Toys.

Q. Can you tell us how Geeky Sex Toys came about and what came first (pardon the pun) the sex toys or the geek fandom?

From the beginning of our relationship Josh and I wanted to start a business together. I have always loved video games and anything geek related. One day we were brainstorming ideas and thought how cool a lightsabre dildo would be. We assumed this product already existed and started searching to buy one for ourselves. To our surprise we found that no one was making and selling these types of toys. Seeing this huge gap in the market we just had to do something about it.  

Q. Your products and marketing are fantastic! Do you and Josh brainstorm the names, how do you come up with the designs and can people suggest products they’d like to see Geeky Sex Toys create?

Yep, it all starts with a brainstorm session between Josh and I. We combine the extensive list of suggestions received from our community, with current trends and movie releases. From there we narrow the suggestions down and figure out the logistics for how a product will look, feel and creative pun names. Our close friends and family also love to text us with their crazy ideas as to what we should produce next (we usually just laugh at these ones though).  

Because everything is produced in house and with no large teams to manage, we can usually have an idea go from concept to physical product ready for testing within a week. 

Q. We love your Couple of Makers videos where you show that every toy is handmade. Tell us how the whole concept came about.

Our Couple of Makers YouTube channel was heavily requested by our community as people continued to ask us questions about how our sex toys were made. 

As the company was growing exponentially creating extra work in the form of a behind the scenes channel seemed a bit counterintuitive. However, it forced us to think differently and improve our processes which actually increased our output.  

We really love creating this behind the scenes content, it makes us feel a lot more connected with our community and we find it is a great creative outlet bridging the gap between Geeky Sex Toys and our entrepreneurial journey. 

Q. Any plans to relocate from Brisvegas to US where the bulk of your sales are happening or do you plan to stay downunder? 

We have looked into relocating to the US in the past but have always arrived at the same conclusion that Australia is the best place on earth ;) 

Q. Let’s talk about Game of Thrones or more specifically your Game of Moans products. 

Creating the Game of Moans range has been one of my personal favourites! When brainstorming we ended up with a list of about 20 products for this range which was obviously an impossible task to achieve. We narrowed the list down to 3-4 of our favourite ideas and got to work designing and testing. To help with the timing and hype we decided to make the company’s second limited edition product: The Night Kink dildo. During our first limited edition release we identified that making a finite number of a single product helped give our customers a uniquely personal and exclusive experience. With only 350 Night Kink dildos available it makes us feel like we are selling something more akin to art as opposed to a mass-produced product.

Q. Your toys are inspired by shows like Game of Thrones and Star Wars. Have you had any celebrity moments where someone involved in one of the shows has reached out? It would be pretty cool to see one of your products in Sheldon’s bedroom.

Haha yeah, we have had a few interesting interactions and there are always people tagging celebrities in our posts. We’re pretty sure at least a few actors know they exist. Won’t mention any names but one of our customers had an actor sign a toy that was themed around them!

Q. I read in an online product review that one of your dildos gave the reviewer a “total fangirl experience”. What’s some of the best feedback you’ve had.

It is not so much a single piece of feedback that we have received, more so just the sheer amount of overwhelming positivity about our products. One of our favourite things as a small business is getting to see the pure excitement in our community members when we release a product they identify with!

Q. What is your best selling product and why?

The unicorn horn is by far our best-selling product. I think with its pearlescent colours, premium quality look and feel and with the added bonus of a suction cup it makes for a great addition to anyone’s toy collection. We decided to create this toy because who doesn’t love unicorns?

Q. Are Geeky Sex Toys more of a novelty item or are they tried and tested self pleasure objects. 

When starting the company, we always wanted to make sure our toys definitely were not just a novelty item. Our aim was to make something that not only looked good but also felt good. In saying that we also didn’t set out to create the greatest feeling dildo the world has ever seen. Our toys are not designed to replace your old faithful but are made to complement your collection by adding the perfect mix of pop culture and pleasure.  

Q. You founded the company with your partner Josh and in 3 years it’s grown to the point where you shipped 3000 toys in 2018. Being a start up business I’m sure it’s all work and no play. But what do you do if you have downtime. Are you looking forward to a GOT marathon in the near future?

Definitely all our time is spent either working on the business or sleeping but I love every second of it and wouldn’t have it any other way. I guess you could say in my case even watching Game of Thrones is classified as ‘work’? Best job ever? But I also love to play video games when I just need to switch off my brain and relax for a little while. 

Q. What do you love most about what you do?

Even though it is currently all work and no play I love the fact that I get to design every aspect of my lifestyle. This allows me the freedom to do what I want, when I want. Also an added bonus is that I get to work side by side with my beautiful partner Josh every second of every day.

Q. You’re only mid 20s but you’ve already achieved so much. What’s on your bucket list? Is there uncharted geekdom in the universe you want to explore?

We have only just scratched the surface with our awesome little company and our brains are swimming with ideas and plans for so many new and exciting things in the world of Geeky Sex Toys. Aside from our company we are also involved in a few projects in and around AI, crypto currency and the investing space. Artificial intelligence and machine learning is something that really fascinates me and I am super excited to see how technologies like this impact us in the future. 

Q. Other than your online store will people find you at Sexpo or Comic-Con to see the products?

We’ve attended conventions like Sexpo in the past but have decided that focusing on our online community and customers is definitely the way of the future. Online we have a wider reach and can spread our Geeky gospel much faster and more efficiently ;).

Q. You seem to be living the dream of “do what you love and love what you do”. Do you have advice for someone keen to get into designing adult toys or turning their passion or hobby into a successful business.

DO IT!! Just start! What is the worst that can happen? For me it has been such an amazing learning experience that was only made possible by jumping into the deep end head first and giving it a go. We hear so many stories from people who don’t know where or how to start. My advice would be if you have an idea start with completing one small thing and then another and then another. Our first dildo was atrocious and will never see the light of day. But it was the boost of confidence and excitement we needed to continue on to bigger and better things. 

Q. Has there been a career highlight or an ah-ha moment?

The transition from a government employee working 9-5 to an entrepreneur starting a company and facing all the various challenges and rewards has honestly been the highlight and most satisfying part of my journey so far. Being the business owner of such a unique company has allowed me to grow and challenge the pre-defined notions of a career and success. 

Q. Do you have a dinner party story you'd like to share? 

We’d just created a whole bunch of stock and had laid it out perfectly on a table to take a photo for social media. We left to run some errands and when we got back realised that Josh forgot the keys and we were locked out. I had to call the incredibly talkative building manager to come and let us in and knew that once the door was open all the dildos would be completely in plain sight. Josh’s plan was to distract her with his charm and whit while I rudely pushed through and quickly stood in the door way blocking the view of the dildos. To this day we still don’t know if she saw the table, but she definitely avoided us as much as possible after that.
