Research confirms what we already know about one night stands!

Researchers at the University of Ottawa talked to over 500 women and asked them what it was that made women want to have casual sex. What is perhaps the most interesting is the top 10 list that came out of the survey, which details the most popular reasons why a woman climbs into bed with a partner. 

  1. The person’s physical appearance turned me on
  2. It feels good
  3. I was ‘horny’
  4. I wanted to experience the physical pleasure
  5. The person had a desirable body
  6. It’s fun
  7. It was ‘in the heat of the moment’
  8. The person had an attractive face
  9. It’s exciting, adventurous
  10. I wanted the pure pleasure

Is it just us, or are there some serious themes in there? It seems to boil down to wanting to feel good or wanting to feel up an attractive someone, and we think everyone here can tick off all of those reasons for many of their sexual encounters. 

Dr. Heather Armstrong who led the study said, "There are still underlying assumptions that women only want sex for emotional reasons or that they’re having casual sex because they want a long-term mate, these results suggest an alternative explanation."

The study was quick to point out that the above reasons were purely for casual sex, and that those for women in actual relationships were a little different. 

“As expected, women reported more physical motivations for casual sex and more emotional motivations for sex in a committed relationship,” the study said. 

But in great news for those in long-term relationships and marriages, the number one reason for having sex with a partner was simply because ‘it feels good’, proving that great sex is still very possible after years of  sleeping with the same person. 

This is backed up by a 2014 study by sociologist Heidi Lyons of 700 young US adults who found that the top 2 reasons for having casual sex for men & women were related to sexual satisfaction: “Because I was horny” and “I thought it would be fun.” 

While the study's findings weren't surprising we’re counting it as an absolute win for the sex positive people out there who know that the traditional belief around women only having sex for love is complete rubbish!
