Circumcision Trends
Q: I'm curious about circumcision trends in Australia. Why did it start? When did it peak? Why did it fall out of favour? The rivalry between helmets and hoodies...
Before I start answering this question I want to make it very clear that firstly this question was asked by an AMM member, and the answers will be based on fact and research, not opinion. And secondly, we are very aware that everyone has their own ideas about this very controversial topic and so we ask for your comments to be respectful.
Also, I am also very aware of religious beliefs and customs surrounding circumcision, and this piece will not be about those, unless necessary for mentioning, but about the general public and medical profession's history with circumcision.
So let's get on shall we...
Circumcision is a medical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis is removed. It has been done for centuries, across countries and cultures, for a whole bunch of reasons, but almost all of those reasons, even the religious ones, can be tracked back historically to basic health and hygiene practices.
This makes sense in a world where soap and science weren't necessarily available to all, and a lot of life was spent in unhygienic spaces. Combine that with an ignorance towards the things that can and do make us sick, and then mix it with the mythology and "science" of the times and you can see why some things were once the way they were.
In (colonised) Australia (there are Indigenous rituals surrounding circumcision, however these are ritualistic, and not done at birth, so I'm not including them in this piece) circumcision became very popular around the 1890s and was done to prevent a range of health issues, even though those "health issues" - like masturbation and alcoholism - have nothing at all to do with having a foreskin or not (remember we mentioned "science").
By the 1930s it was pretty much standard practice for men heading off to war, and then that custom got passed on to their sons when they returned home. It grew even more popular, so that by the 1950s around 90% of all boys born in Australia were getting snipped at birth.
By the 1970s, however, that number fell to around 50% and kept dropping until by the mid 90s only around 15% of parents made that choice for their boys.
There have been a few times since then that numbers have risen and fallen and, according to a few different researchers, this could have to do with large influxes of Muslim people to the country over certain periods, however because the statistics don't look at the religious beliefs of patients, this is more of an educated guess than any actual proof.
It fell out of favour mostly because doctors and medical researchers began to speak out about how unnecessary it actually was, and that many of the ideas and reasons that had been given for the practice turned out to be either misleading, misunderstood, or just plain wrong. It really started to decline in numbers after the turn of the new century, and in 2010 the Royal Australasian College of Physicians decided that there was no medical reason for it to be necessary at every birth.
Most other "Western" countries like Britain and Canada also changed around that time, and these days, unless it's very obvious that the penis needs to be circumcised for medical reasons, if you want it done to your child you need to find a specific doctor or religious practitioner.
As for the rivalry, I'd say that's mostly subjective.
Most guys I know are happy with what they have, and don't want or think much about the other at all, and while many women may have preferences, for the most part, and for most women, the dick is the last thing we actually care about in the grand scheme of things. If you're a good dude, we'll probably like your dick, but if you're a shit person, you could have the golden dick of all dicks and we still wouldn't fuck it.
I hope this answers your questions, we really do enjoy getting the out-of-the-box ones.

More than a month agoMy Father, born in 1917 was not cut. But as he matured from teen to adult, it was discovered that he had Phimosis and his foreskin could not be fully retracted, so he was cut as an adult. This was a very painful and unpleasant experience. When I was born his logic was that I would be cut as a baby to make sure that I never had to go through the horrid experience he had. He had been told there was a risk the condition would be passed on.

More than a month agoBeing a "baby boomer" many of us were "uncut"....
ReplyMy wife and I married in the late 60's...she was a virgin and had not seen a "circumcised" cock...
A long story. but in the early 80's we ventured into the "lifestyle" by way of "Rosie" magazine...we met a nice guy with a "circumcised cock"...he was endowed with a huge clean cut "knob"...
After watching my wife relishing licking / sucking his big knob all over and down to his hard ball sac...she was on "cock sucking another plateau" with him...so eager to pleasure him...
After that session we chatted and she said his cock looked "so hard. clean and inviting"...and so I had my cock "cut" for her viewing / sucking pleasure!

More than a month agoThanks Eva for raising the subject. I get the impression it's done (a lot) less in Europe, barring religious reasons.
At later age, I might need a cut. However I am hesitating because they take away not only quite a piece of skin but also quite some finer nerves i.c. those that give you pleasure... And the skin of the head is getting dryer and a bit harder being exposed all the time, hence a bit less sensitive . Would be happy to hear from those men that had their's cut at later age if they experienced a drop in sensitivity or otherwise. Thanks

More than a month agoI personally only like cut cocks. I don’t like the look of uncut cocks and the thought of having to pull back the foreskin to devour the head of a cock just doesn’t appeal to me but that’s my personal view. I’m sure people will comment and say that’s shallow etc but it’s no different to a man only liking big tits on a female or prefers a female to not have protruding lips downstairs. We all have our likes and dislikes.

More than a month agoI would like to kindly point out your comparison to a male circumcision being like a man liking big boobs is in accurate… I think what they are trying to get at is that it is a barbaric practice that should have NEVER been introduced. Female circumcision is not as widely spoken about. When you related a male curcumcision to big boobs… I would have to say that if you are a woman and you are wanting a man to cut his foreskin off, you should not be offended if he was to turn around and say, can I cut your clit off after? Your comparison is two totally different things… we are talking about abusing a child’s penis, it is so disheartening to hear a female is disgusted by the natural sight of the male anatomy… when the un-natural has become the normal… imagine giving birth to your daughter and the law was you had to cut off every clitoris because we thought it was ugly. Think…. We all have feelings… and to think I’ve nearly acted on emotion from this subject to end something as important as my own life… I really feel strongly on it… I truly feel the doctors and people performing this act should be incarcerated… they are torturing a child…. Don’t give me that rubbish that they don’t feel it… they are screaming in pain!

More than a month agoThe issue is the person should have the choice. Because some adults hate their parents for doing it to them.

More than a month agoI like men who treat me with respect and who make me laugh. I like men who shower and know how to wipe their arses properly. I like men who actively participate in destroying the patriarchy and systems of toxicity on the planet.
I like men who know themselves and their worth and the worth of those who can do nothing for them.
I am a former sex worker who has met men and penises from all around the world in all shapes, sizes, personality types and skill levels and I can tell you, without a hint of doubt or lip service,
that I really don't give a crap what their dick looks like.

More than a month agoAt age 55 I had to get circumsised for medical reasons. It seems normal now and I can't really recall what I was like before. A former lover of mine decided she wanted to have sex again and she gave the best oral she had ever given, clearly she like my modified cock. I have to adnit the sensation during intercourse was slightly better.

More than a month agoI hadn't had an uncut cock until I met my husband as it's not a common thing in Asia but I am now a fan of the circumcised penis. As I find it cleaner and more enjoyable to perform oral sex on but when it comes down to it it's how it's used is more important than if it's cut or uncut.

More than a month agoGood article. If you look at this practice objectively it amounts to nothing more than male genital mutilation. Let the skin stay!

More than a month agoGreat article Eva. When I was born in the 80s, it was luck of the draw whether you ended up with a helmet or hoodie. Amazing how things have changed in a generation. From majority helmets to majority hoodies. But most guys will still argue whatever they have is superior.

More than a month agoHave played with both, but now have a strong personal preference for players who are circumcised.

More than a month agoThere is a lot of discrimination by women against guys who are not cut, you see this in many profiles. I am not cut but my foreskin is pulled right back so I have a nice knob during sex, I am also very particular about hygiene and it gets washed many times a day, in fact every time I have a wee. My lady prefers me as I am so that is a plus but I have been shunned by other women simply because I stated Uncut on my profile.

More than a month agoI personally don’t view it as discrimination per se, but more a personal preference. Similar to how some men prefer a women with larger breasts for example. I certainly don’t take offence if a man prefers a larger breasted woman, but more respect their preference. And just to clarify, an uncircumcised penis for me has nothing at all to do with personal hygiene either. I just think they are more aesthetically appealing on the whole, and more enjoyable to perform fellatio on. But again, this is just my personal preference though, and I most definitely am not intending to be offensive towards men with my choices.

More than a month agoIm uncut and was in the army for a while in bush wars and I had to waste some of my drinking water to keep it clean so I would have preferred being cut - I think it looks good but I do love being ungloved by a lady slowly revealing my shiny head ... win win whichever ..

More than a month agoI am a 60s baby , all my 3 other brothers have been done. My 4 sons haven't that was due to my ex wife not wanting them done. I think it is a lot more cleaner being cut.
