There's nothing sinful about lust!

The idea of lust as evil is a pretty old concept, it is after all one of the seven deadly sins. I will save you the google search I had to do and tell you that the other six are; pride, greed, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. I am not sure in what ways these are deadly but I am assured that they are.

Historically lust has got a pretty bad rap. It is always the evil characters in movies that cannot control their lust for sex, power and revenge that go around hurting everyone and come to some terrible end often in an explosion. In horror movies, we know it is the horny teenagers that give in to lust that will be slaughtered by the monster first. It seems unfair that the PR on lust is across the board kind of bad. Sure, it has on occasion led people astray, it is a pretty powerful force and if misdirected and misunderstood it can lead you into trouble. I admit the whole Helen of Troy thing was a bit of a disaster. If she hadn’t run off with Paris a whole war could have been avoided.

Conversely, our society has always celebrated anything ‘love’. Love is the ‘good one’ the one that is absolutely okay to express and to feel and to act on.  And yet love has caused just as much havoc if not more than lust ever has. In fact, love seems to be a catch-all excuse for terrible behaviour. Love or rather the ending or the rejection of love has been a good excuse for all sorts of rotten behaviour including public tirades and tears on YouTube or my favourite, the astronaut who put on an astronaut diaper to enable her to drive without stopping to confront her rival for the man she loved. Crazy in love.

It used to be that if you desired someone you also had to say you loved them and wanted to marry them. Thankfully that has changed, we are more progressive and we are allowed to admit without feeling ashamed that we have sexual desires for someone that have nothing to do with loving them. We can just admit we want to jump someone's bones without having to make up a fairy story to justify our lust. How many young people used to get married just because they wanted to bone? By being able to explore our sexuality and to experience the difference between love and lust we are less likely to confuse them and make a terrible mistake by marrying the first sexy person that comes along.

Our enlightened attitudes mean we can now openly have sex with people we are not in love with. By no longer confusing love and lust there is more chance that we will know the difference and hopefully be able to make better long-term decisions. For instance, we can just go and have sex with someone who gets us hot despite their outlook on life and attitudes not meshing with our own. Hell, I once slept with someone who voted for Tony Abbot. Which goes to show that sometimes we do things we might regret due to lust. Don’t get me wrong I don’t regret fucking him, just having to tell you that I slept with a conservative. Although he was definitely not conservative in the bedroom.

Instead of trying to make something work we can just admit this is lust and be done with it.

We should enjoy how lust can lead us to a surprising, unexpected sexual partner. We should give in to our lust and enjoy the honest raw sexiness of being with someone with no baggage and no expectations of the other but instead for the pure joy of the moment you get to indulge in your lustful fantasy. 

I am not knocking love and I am certainly not saying that the two can’t be related. In fact, combine love and lust and you have a pretty wonderful cocktail. 

I just think it is not enough that we are allowed to admit to lust and occasionally indulge in it. I think we should stop looking at lust as something that is naughty and that needs to be controlled and instead, enjoy this powerful sexy feeling and revel in the way it makes your body feel and your mind reel. 

I vote we remove lust from the list of deadly sins and instead celebrate it. I say we add it to the list of virtues instead.

    This is something I think about a lot. It seems to me that lust is a very dangerous force. I used to get so upset about slut-shaming but one time I was meditating and realised that whilst terribly unfair and has caused so many problems the purpose of it - to control sexuality - has some merit.
    Powerful lust seems to me to be similar to a extremely pleasurable drug.
    I appreciate both sides of the argument, being indecisive sucks!

    I was brought up a good Catholic boy and the Bible tells you it is a sin to lust after someone - thinking about it in today’s terms could that be confused with stalking?
    I’m not sure but I’m guessing that by being members on this site we’ve all accepted that we are sinners ... so lust away ...

    I have lusted all my life. I do not regret it, however, I regret not learning early in my life that "love" and "lust" are separate things. I lust for my woman today (and I told her so as she brushed her teeth whilst naked in the bath room) but the look of disgust and pity for me that I should talk like that (still after 16 years) destroys the rise in my groin. I still lust after sexual contact with her and as always with others though rarely anything but lust for these. I still desire and lust more. After reading this I do not feel ashamed. It explains where I am and why I got here.

    I'm not religious but my partner's line is always "God didn't want us to be unhappy". In other words, drink, have sex, have fun as long as it's consensual and not hurting anyone else. I like his way of thinking.

    Absolutely spot on. It is society perverts, old people and powerful people; who wanted to enjoy the lust by pushing others behind, under the pretext of social norm. It is selfishly created policy or norm in society structure under the pretest of good and moral behaviour.
    Man and Women are meant to have good time. The lust and sex should be so open and there should not be any reservations. I am against forced, unwilling, pressurised sex. However, if two people have instant lust; there should not be any regulations and restriction by anyone to stop them. How good it will be when man and women indulge in instant sex in lift, office, bar, gym, garden. Even if not sex, there should be instant lust on oral sex. It should be so free without any borders, caste, religion, ethnicity. it should be instant and without much drama to have privacy. Time has changed and human society has came long way from stone age to modern super fast robotic generations. As we go under the hammer of norms, values, culture, our age get rotten. When we become old; all we have negativity and sadness that we have not fulfilled our lust when body was superbly in shape to enjoy the beauty and luxury of stunning and wild sex.

    Absolutely agree when you ally lust and sex. In this instance it’s about shame & there should never ever be shame around sex. However lust for power, lust for possessions or possessing I see as anti life & detrimental to the human condition.
