Ditch the razor and increase your sexual attraction!
Let’s be honest, a guy with a little stubble is pretty sexy!
Whilst Baby Boomers associated the well groomed man with success, it seems Millennials are attracted to more rugged, hairy men. And research just released is good news for hipsters with a recent study finding that women looking for long term relationships find men with beards more attractive.
Australian researchers at the University of QLD, Charles Sturt University and the University of NSW conducted a study of 8,520 women who were asked to assess images of male faces for physical attractiveness.
Researcher Dr Danielle Sulikowski said, “The idea behind the research was to find out how beards affect male attractiveness to females in long term relationships versus short term relationships."
The men chosen for the research study were photographed clean shaven, with 5 days of light stubble, with 10 days of heavy stubble and with a full growth beard and facial features were also digitally altered giving the men a more feminine or masculine appearance.
Men with stubble were judged the most attractive when it came to casual hookups. We're guessing that five o'clock shadow reinforces the "bad boy" image for women looking for Mr Right Now rather than Mr Right.
But the study also found that when assessing a man as being a suitable long term partner, men with beards were rated as more attractive than men who were clean shaven.
The study also found that as facial hair increased the women rated the men as being more masculine.
Researchers believe that beards probably evolved to help men boost their standing among other men. A beard implies a man is more mature and dominant and this gave men more mating opportunities as rivals became intimidated and stood aside.
The study was published in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology and found: "Beards may be more attractive to women when considering long-term than short-term relationships as they indicate a male's ability to successfully compete socially with other males for resources."
In 2015 researchers at the University of Western Australia solved the mystery of the hipster beard phenomenon. They found that men who feel under pressure to compete are attempting to stand out in the crowd by being more flamboyant with their whiskers. The study looked at 154 species of primates and found in societies where individual recognition was limited that the male of the species developed "badges" to enhance their sexual attractiveness. But it's not just a modern phenomenon, it was also evident during the 19th century when the pool of available women was limited and beards, moustaches and side whiskers became very common in Britain.
So while the metrosexual fashion trend of the 1990s saw men reach for the moisturiser and be meticulous about their grooming, the hipster movement has seen a shift back to men embracing facial hair. We've retreated to a time of primal urges and body fuzz - if you've heard the term "lumbersexual" you know what we're talking about. Facial hair is no longer seen as a sign of laziness but gives the impression of being solid and a good provider.
So ditch the razor guys and increase your sexual attractiveness.

More than a month agoI have had a beard for over 25 years, and in that time I have taken note of every survey I came across. I even conducted mini surveys of my own from time to time.
This "survey" is at odds with every survey I have seen in the last 25 years, and it certainly is at odds with my own experience in talking to women on this subject.
I'm not talking about a 2 day growth here ... I'll talking about the caveman beards depicted above.
My take is that at least 70% of women despise beards. Not dislike ... despise.
I have worn one anyway because that's my preference.
It would be interesting to see the results of an AMM poll on this subject. And if you do run a survey, don't cloud the issue by confusing a 2 day growth with a caveman beard, as this "study" has done.

More than a month agoIt's the younger guys - under 35ish that look great with a beard....also it's about the hairstyle (on the head). I'm 44 and love the look of a young guy with a top knot and a beard!

More than a month agoHahaha, I find this really funny. I have a beard, but that's because hair grows faster on my face than anywhere else. Sometimes trimmed, sometimes not, sometimes scruffy, sometimes neat. It's there to satisfy me and what feels comfortable at the time for me, not the opposite sex. The idea is not to attract women who expect one to look the same all the time just to impress, but to attract one that's intuitive enough to realise we can only make others comfortable, when we're comfortable ourselves.
ReplyI don't for a second think women think (conciously or subconsciously) that far into beards. And those that do, wouldn't have a clue anyway. It's purely a superficial preference...which is fine too. Most beards/lack of beards say extremely little about a person's personality.
And I hate the idea that most peeps with beards are now thought of as hipsters. Where the f did that come from? Hahaha

More than a month agoI don't mind beards or no beards. I've seen very attractive men with or without beards. Either way, I'm happy, so long as they're attractive, nice, well mannered and are hygeinic.

More than a month agoAT the end of the day a clean shaven, stubble or bearded face doesn't chance the individual. Attraction is attraction, which goes deeper than what is just seen on the exterior. A beard can either be shaved and or grown again. So dismissing someone who you do find attractive because of it is a joke to be honest. Come on people stop being so vain and see the individual for who they are and what they have to offer.
ReplyI'm currently bearded, but have rocked all kinds of facial hair styles to clean shaven. I think if you can pull it off do it. You only live once and facial hair is an expression of ones self. So ladies who love a bearded man, you know what to come.

More than a month agoAs someone with extremely sensitive skin physically beards are not for me. And personally I don't like the scruffy look. Because - well it looks scruffy. A full well kept beard I can appreciate (but dont want near me) but that "I can't be bothered shaving look" ? Nothing attractive to me with that.

More than a month agoSo finally 'studies' have recognised what i have felt for years.... Men with beards are hot! And more masculine appearing.... As for the lower ' beard' ... Same goes for that... Natural to trimmed is more masculine than shaved clean...in my opinion... ROCK WHAT YA GOT!

More than a month agoso the writer is a bearded lady or a bearded man?
what a load of crap on an article..... useful to wrap digital fish and chips!
what one person is attracted to another person is increasingly variable given humans are more and more 'open minded' to the other person being a unique individual - whether it be for the intensity of sex or depth of personality relationship.

More than a month agoDid you read the article? It's a summary of a research study by 3 Australian Universities of 8,500 females. It was widely discussed in press a couple of weeks ago. And yes it only looked at that physical attribute but that was the criteria behind the study. You can read about the study: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jeb.12958/full

More than a month agoHere's an idea...how about we just stop telling people what is "sexy" and "hot" and just let them look the way they want to look.

More than a month agoWell said...these comments sections, and sometimes the articles, abound in generalisations and blanket statements. As an Irish friend of mine says "There's a lid for every pot!"
AntechinusRex
More than a month agoYup, agreed. It may be true that more women like beards. That doesn't exclude there being other women who can't stand them.
In fact here on AMM I come across more profiles that say "no facial hair" than ones that mention it as a positive. This may be because a strong turn off is more important than the gentler "I prefer men with beards"...
I choose what makes me feel good. Not so interested in other peoples opinions about my facial hair...

More than a month agoA well groomed man is sexy, although the bushranger look has never appealed to me (no disrespect).

More than a month agoMen should look like men! And for me I find a man with body hair is very attractive...that being said...when it comes to the private garden hiding those crown jewels and manhood in a veritable bush is a turn off for a decent deep throating attempt! - Mrs CH
ReplyAnd here I was thinking I was being lazy - when really I was just being masculine! - Mr CH

More than a month agoWell I'd definitely agree that beards are more attractive. But well groomed, thick ones that don't trail down your chest or with huge mustaches! That just looks lazy

More than a month agoI've had this conversation with my 22 y/o daughter & some of her friends & the overwhelming consensus is that full blown beards are the worst.
I have also noticed in recent months that the trend is dying out, most likely because it is so unattractive to most women.

More than a month agoI am so glad I am not trendy.Had my full beard for 40 years.Stuff the trends.

More than a month agoand looking like ned kelly with a bad hair cut?
Replylmao that is considered attractive?? I suppose silly women go for anything that is popular and non different these days.
even if I was bisexual or gay I wouldn't even go for that look in someone.
and don't get me started on the silly tattoos, but that is another argument.

More than a month agoI am of the baby boomer generation and yes I love beards but only if they are looked after properly. This means shampooing the hair and especially beard every single night. Apart from being better groomed keeping your beard very clean your face underneath stays clean and stops irritation. I know this because I was married to a man for thirty-five years who had a beard, still does and spends lots of time outside.
