Let's Netflix and Chill

Couple snuggled on couch to Netflix and chill

If you think "Netflix and chill" means take out pizza and catching up on series 2 of Narcos ... think again! "Netflix and chill" has become the viral catchphrase for "Do you want to come up for a coffee?"

One of my girlfriend commented on Facebook, "I've just discovered what Netflix and chill means. It explains a few awkward conversations." So given the majority of members on Adult Match Maker are keen to hook up we thought a blog post was needed.

The Urban dictionary defines "Netflix and chill" as "going over to your partner's house and fucking with Netflix in the background".

Netflix is not only a marketing phenomenon with 5 million Aussies accessing the site and 65 million subscribers worldwide, it has changed the language for booty calls.

Initially "Netfix and chill" was exactly that - a quiet night in front of the TV - watching your favourite series in a marathon weekend session or reliving all those timeless shows you love. But in 2014 Twitter users started using the phrase with wink emoticons which gave the phrase sexual overtones. And this eventually led to it becoming a euphemism for sex.  "Want to Netflix and chill?" Hell yeah!

On social media there were posts of smug male faces captioned “when she says yes to Netflix and chill”, while girls posted photos of surpised faces captioned “When you find out what Netflix and chill actually means”.

And girls let's be clear about something. If you get a text or a call at 8pm then Netflix and chill is not a date!  If you are dating naive or just back in the dating game after an extended relationship please don't confuse this with a date. He doesn't want to be your boyfriend, he's not looking for an LTR, he's lined you up as a fuck buddy. Don't be surprised if the pants are unzipped (his or yours) before the opening credits have finished. Forget about watching your favourite episode of OITNB - it's a booty call and quite honestly it lacks imagination. Netflix and chill has created an environment where guys don't even need to try to be creative about inviting a girl over for sex.

And where does that leave us with consent? My girlfriend said she's had some "awkward conversations". So by enthusiastically agreeing to come over for what she thought was a movie night, were the guys assuming that consent had been agreed to?

How do you manage it? The best response is to be totally upfront. If you're not sure if they really want to watch House of Cards or they're after a hookup and you know you feel like kicking back but you're not sure if getting naked is something you want to do. Tell them!

Of course some companies didn't make the connection but provided us with some laughs because of their faux pas.

And while Netflix doesn't do "porn", here is our top 10 list of shows to watch on Netflix while you .... er ... chill.

  • Come Undone
  • Anatomy of Hell
  • Sex and Lucia
  • Bitter Moon
  • En La Cama
  • XX/XY
  • Y Tu Mama Tambien
  • The Piano Teacher
  • Bedways
  • The Exterminating Angels

But what about if you live with someone. Can you still Netflix and chill? You can always use Netflix to inspire your sex life. Watch one of our top 10 picks and recreate the scene with your partner. Or what about strip Netflix. Every time someone takes off clothing in a show you're watching, you and your partner do too. And you can always pick a popular phrase in a show and every time they say it you have a drink or kiss your partner.

And of course you can still have Netfix and chill without the chill - the simple act of two people getting together to watch Netflix and relax.

But we get it! "Want to Stan and chill" just sounds creepy!

Yes - what's with men these days? I'd never just invite a girl I'd not met over to "Netflix&chill". Disrespectful.
And some men wonder why they have limited success with online dating!?
