What is the average penis size?
A couple of things we’d like to point out before we talk at any length on this subject (do you see what we did there?). Many studies relating to penis size depend on self-reporting so the stats for those studies are often skewed due to volunteer bias. So men have probably been worrying for nothing, as the average penis size isn’t as big as they think it is.
A review published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy in 2020 found that most men thought the average length of an erect penis was greater than 6 inches. The review combined the findings of 10 studies where researchers physically took the measurements of erect penises and found the mean average was 5.36 inches. They then looked at 21 studies which measured stretched penises and found the mean average was 5.11 inches. So based on these studies, and adjusting for bias, researchers determined that the average length of an erect penis was between 5.1 and 5.5 inches (12.95 to 13.97 cm).
Many studies have found that men are not happy with the length of their penis and feel they are smaller compared to other men. A 2017 study published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour surveyed over 4,000 men to find out how they felt about their penis and the study found:
- 27% were unhappy with length of their flaccid penis
- 19% were unhappy with their erect penis
- 15% were unhappy with the girth of their penis.
And we get it! The penis is viewed as the symbol of masculinity and plays a vital role in a man’s opinion of his sexual prowess and desirability, and being unhappy with your penis can also affect self-confidence. Men who are dissatisfied with their penis also tend to be less sexually active. So the inflated self-reported figures about penile length have a negative effect on many men who may feel they don’t measure up. We blame porn and also Kinsey who conducted a self-reported study back in 1948 which found the mean erect length for the 1,770 Caucasian men who participated was 6.21 inches.
Even men who think they are average often express a desire to be packing more but comments on our blog articles about big cocks debunk that this is what women want. While some women love meaty, lengthy cocks which Eva talked about in a recent article, a study published in the Journal of Psychology of Men & Masculinity found that 85% of women surveyed were satisfied with their partner’s penis size and 2% actually wished their partner was smaller.
A study in 2014 asked women what they thought was the length of an “average” penis and their estimate was 5.29 inches which is in line with the 2020 review. And in fact another study found that women consider penis size the 9th most important feature for a man, while men rate it much higher, in 3rd place.
Some related trivia we also found interesting was that in the self-reported studies gay men typically had longer penises than hetero men. Go figure! It’s apparently called social desirability bias, and partially to blame for the over-estimates in self-reported studies. And a survey conducted by condom brand SKYN, found that the average UK penis size had grown by around an inch. Whilst we don’t want to diss their findings it’s probably very unlikely that this is scientifically accurate.
And in case you were wondering, there is no link between testosterone levels and the length or girth of your penis.
So it’s not the size which counts according to the women out there, it’s what you do with it and even more about the person who owns the penis and the connection they have with you.
So go forth penis owners and fuck with confidence with the knowledge that we’ve debunked the misinformation out there.
