Why does flying make us horny?
Are you a member of the Mile High Club? What’s the appeal? Let’s be honest a quickie can be amazingly hot but why does flying make us feel horny. Let’s find out why.
Travel makes us feel adventurous
Remember during covid when all we wanted to do was escape our LGA or state border and travel!!! We missed that thrill of setting off on a new adventure to far flung locations or our fave Aussie beach. We’ve written our last report for work, scheduled an out of office notification and packed our bags ready to take on the world. But perhaps the world for a short moment in time is taking on that handsome stranger sitting across the aisle. Just relaxing on a holiday can put some people in the mood and I’ve always said the journey is just as important as the destination, if you know what I mean.
We respond to vibrations
Nicole Prause, a neuroscientist researching human sexual behavior believes it may have to do with the vibrations of the engine. She explained that a study found that humans respond to precise levels of vibrations and specifically the frequency we experience in airplane seats. So planes tend to be one huge vibrating flying machine. It’s just like a big ‘ol sex toy in the sky.
We get an adrenaline rush
It doesn’t matter whether you have a fear of flying or just breathe a sigh of relief once the wheels leave (or return to) the ground, the adrenalin rush is real even if you’re not aware of it. Your adrenal glands produce the hormone DHEA which your body transforms into testosterone and estrogen. So when the body thinks it’s about to experience danger it not only gives you a rush of adrenalin but that causes testosterone/estrogen production to dramatically increase. Basically the adrenalin rush can mimic the feeling of sexual excitement. And there’s a kick-on effect in that the thought of risky sex makes us even hornier. So danger = horny!
We want to join the Mile High Club
Just the fact that it’s referred to as a Club makes it sound exclusive and something you want membership to. And don’t forget public sex is a very common fantasy! On Adult Match Maker over 31,000 members have public sex listed as a sexual interest. And although we don’t have stats in Australia relating to sex on a plane, Justin Lehmiller, a research fellow at the Kinsey Institute found that 53% of American adults have fantasised about sex on a plane, 9% of them regularly. I wonder how many of those actually get to cash in their frequent fuck/flyer points?
Sexual arousal makes us take risks
Research has found that sexual arousal creates a kind of tunnel vision where we focus on our sexual gratification without considering the consequences. Basically our ability to evaluate risk is impaired when we’re sexually aroused. So someone who might never have considered sex in the toilet of a plane who meets a handsome stranger, a little bit of flirting, perhaps a few wines and the talk turns to sex. At that point you might not care about the proximity to other passengers, or the cramped situation or that you only just met this person. You. Just. Want. Sex.
Close proximity can be a turn on
Our perception of this might be a little different post covid but literally you are packed onto a plane with a whole bunch of strangers. You have to squeeze past others to get into your seat, you bump booties putting your bags into the overhead lockers, touch knees with the person sitting next to you. Physical contact can quickly spark sexual interest especially on a boring long haul flight. And let’s not forget those pheromones bouncing around an enclosed space which also stimulate desire and sexual arousal.
Our inhibitions lower as we start to fall asleep
Personally I hate those flights where they quickly serve you dinner and dim the lights. But it’s well documented that as people start to fall asleep our neural inhibition is reduced which promotes sexual thoughts and feelings. “Sex occurs overwhelmingly in the hours just before sleep,” said Nicole Prause. “Simple conditioning may lead us to have sexual thoughts approaching sleep simply because that is when most people are most likely to be having sex.”
It’s never really appealed to me, I like a soft bed, sexy music and mood lighting but if you’re planning to join the Mile High Club then Eva’s article about sex in tight spaces is a must read. Oh and it’s also illegal but if you’re feeling horny that might just make it more appealing.
So c’mon, we wanna know, are you a member of the Mile High Club and was it someone you were travelling with or an anonymous stranger?
